SOL 6.8- Coordinate Planes |
Possible Misconceptions & Common Errors to Avoid |
- I can label the axes and the quadrants on a coordinate plane.
- I can name the quadrant or the axis of a given point on the coordinate plane. - I can place points on a coordinate graph given the coordinates. - I can give the coordinates of a point located on a coordinate plane. - I can describe the distance to each axis from a point. - I can determine the distance between two points located on the same horizontal or vertical line. |
- Students may confuse the sequence of the coordinates in an ordered pair.
- Students may get confused with the placement of zero in an ordered pair when the point is directly on an axis. EX- When graphing 5 on the x-axis, a student may identify the ordered pair as (0,5) instead of (5,0). - Students may not have a working knowledge of the words vertical and horizontal. - Students may mislabel the quadrants in the clockwise direction instead of the counter clockwise direction. - Students may not understand that the distance is always positive. Therefore the distance from the x-axis or the y-axis can only be expressed as positive value. |
